Gare Barn is located in beautiful countryside on the north side of the River Fal within easy reach of the village of Tregony and about 15 minutes outside the city of Truro.
The village of Tregony in Cornwall is often referrred to as the 'gateway to the Roseland'. The exceptionally wide Fore Street is a relic from the days when this was a busy port and market town with considerable traffic. The port has long since silted up due in part to china clay workings up stream, but Tregony has retained its charm. Tregony has an unusual clock tower on the Fore Street and the seventeenth century almshouses which boast an unusual wooden gallery. The site of a twelfth century Norman castle known as ‘Treg-ney’ from which the village got its name is situated on Tregony Hill.
The woods and riverside in the area between here and Ruan Lanihorne are fantastic to explore. The river is a firm favourite with ornithologists, the magical Lamorran Woods are alive with bluebells in the spring, you're as likely to pass deer or pheasants as you are motorists along this stretch of the Roseland. The Lost Gardens of Heligan, the Eden Project and the city of Truro are only a short drive away from Tregony. Heading further into the Roseland you can find sandy beaches at Pendower, Cream Teas at Mellinsey Mill near Veryan, and sailing and boat trips in St Mawes.
Truro Cathedral dominates the skyline of the only City in Cornwall, set on the original St Mary's Church site, the current building's foundations were laid in 1880. Bodmin still holds the official title of Cornwalls County Town, but many view Truro as the focal point of Cornwall. The Hall for Cornwall situated on Lemon Quay attracts many famous visiting artists performing ballets, dance, stand up comedy as well as west end shows since it's refurbishment in 2007. Lemon Quay plays host to many events throughout the year including the Cornwall Food & Drink Festival in the Autumn and the famous Truro Fatstock Show just before Christmas. Regular farmers markets occur every Wednesdays & Saturday and there are also arts & craft markets on Saturdays. The Royal Cornwall Museum tucked away on River Street hosts many visiting exhibitions as well as having amassed a sizeable collection of its own.
There is a wonderful range of shopping for the visitor including all the regular high street stores including Marks & Spencer, Tescos & Sainsburys, but also a wide range of more specialist stores. It really is worth a wander through the back streets and alleys to find some fabulous little boutiques. Truro, located in central Cornwall is a great base for exploring the County, being 20 minutes from the North Coast, 30 minutes to Newquay Airport, 20 minutes from Falmouth, home to the National Maritime Museum and 30 minutes from the beautiful Roseland Peninsula and the St Mawes Castle.
| We loved Gare Barn! It was very well presented and equipped. It suited us all very well, particularly the beautiful living area. It was rural and peaceful, yet within easy reach of good villages, beaches and walks. |

We did indeed had a marvellous holiday! We have over many years stayed in many different properties at home and abroad booked via a variety of agencies/websites. Gare Barn was one of the very best ever! It was so spacious, a well designed conversion; it was comfortably and attractively furnished and very well equipped . It was also beautifully clean. Our 2-year old nephew was able to play outside on the grassy area safely and happily and he loved watching the tractors................. and it was so blissfully quiet. Please pass on our thanks to the owners for their efforts in presenting Gare Barn so well (and for the lovely cake!) as we forgot to sign the visitors book before leaving. We used Cornwall Cottages for the first time but would certainly look at you again. We found your website easy to use, the information was clearly presented and the photos were accurate. We had a wonderful family holiday so thanks to all concerned. We are thinking of perhaps going to the Lizard next year ................... but may be tempted to return to Gare Barn! |
